Displacement

Seascape "Milestone", Rashid Johnson, 2022

A tiny balloon floats across the dark night sky

Filled with draining helium, tied together with a withering string

The waves of the ocean below are an iridescent indigo

Swaying back and forth, back and forth

Gently whispering secrets only eels and schools of fish will know

The balloon is jealous:

They have community, locked in an eternal bond

No matter how much the tides turn,

For centuries it has been,

For centuries more it will be

It has only been five days

The balloon has drifted a continent away from its birthplace

Searching for the home that it can’t remember

Yearning for the serenity of the moon
